Asukla is a Sanskrit term that means “not white.” It is a word typically used with its opposite, akrishna (“not black”), as the compound word asukla-akrishna, which translates as “neither white nor black” and refers to a grading of karma. Because asukla-akrishna is not white or black, positive or negative, it is considered balanced karma. This balance is deemed necessary for the yogi to attain liberation from samsara, or the cycle of life, death and rebirth.
